Book excerpt: You just watched the 6 o'clock news. Now ask yourself, "When is God going to throw in the towel?" God came close once before: The Flood of Genesis. And John, in the last book of the Bible, wrote the newscast for the Armageddon. So where do we stand right now? Steve Simon doesn't presume to know. After all, he's an agnostic. But he does choose to believe in God. However, he's losing his faith in man. On the other hand, he hasn't lost his sense of humor and he has a cat to guide him through the hard times. Makes sense. The Rainbreaker is a fable that attacks some tough moral issues with a lot of good-natured fun. Lest you think that the author is poking fun at God, rest assured. God always comes out on top. It's "stupid human tricks" (such as the failure of nearly all human institutions) that convince Steve Simon that God will not destroy the world but simply replace humans with animals. Or something like that. Adults who've enjoyed "Marley & Me" and the satire of Amrose Bierce, P.J. O'Rourke, and Chris Buckley will laugh out loud at this genre-bender with a message.

This book was released on 2015-09-09 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a reading of Matthew's Gospel as though it were written to integrate with, advance, and conclude the existing body of Scriptures. Matthew is read as though John was the last prophet of God and Israel's last chance for repentance, and that Jesus was YHWH who had come to judge the Temple, priesthood, and covenant nation according to the terms of the covenant God made with Moses at Sinai. Through this lens, new interpretations are given to the infancy narrative, the Sermon on the Mount, the mission, the parables, and Jesus' arrival in Jerusalem along with the events that followed. By reading Matthew this way, a greater appreciation can be gained for its necessary place in the canon, and many of Matthew's well-known conundrums can be meaningfully addressed. As a Hebrew document, Matthew understood the necessity to record the crimes against YHWH/Jesus in Israel and Jerusalem as the ultimate cause for the termination of the ethnically and geographically bound covenant, which could then be replaced by the cross-cultural and international covenant that Christians now enjoy.

Book excerpt: This book is a chronology of major events and characters in the Old and New Testament of the Bible witnessed by God and Jesus his Son. With each such encounter, we learn a little more about the true nature of God and Jesus. God acknowledges that he is the creator of heaven and earth and all of mankind, retaining the right to destroy some or all of it, with or without cause. God does as he pleases and can be judged by no one. Although he espouses righteousness, he will have mercy on whom he will have mercy and compassion upon whom he will have compassion. By his own admission, he is a jealous God, condemning anyone who worships false idols. To disobey him is to have a death wish. In comparison, Jesus is the humble servant of God, sacrificing himself to save mankind. He has nothing but disdain for priests who cloak themselves in raiment to demonstrate their own holiness. The only valid reason for accumulating wealth is to share it with others. aEURoeLove thy neighbor as thyselfaEUR is the most important commandment and one should love his enemies. The Ten Commandments and the Law of Moses should work for man and not vice versa. In any given situation, it should be changed, modified, and even ignored to achieve fairness. Parties should work complaints out for themselves and use courts as a last resortaEUR"forgiveness as a first resort. The Bible contains zero humor, but plenty of fodder to create some: six-hundred-year-old Noah and his family on a Disney cruise with seven pairs of every animal species in the world aboard a 450-foot Ark; LotaEUR(tm)s two daughters getting him drunk and having their way with him; Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar II under GodaEUR(tm)s spell as a farm animal for seven years, training as the first Sasquatch.

Book excerpt: Providing an intellectual interpretation to the work of Edwidge Danticat, this new edited collection provides a pedagogical approach to teach and interpret her body of work in undergraduate and graduate classrooms. Approaches to Teaching the Works of Edwidge Danticat starts out by exploring diasporic categories and postcolonial themes such as gender constructs, cultural nationalism, cultural and communal identity, and moves to investigate Danticat’s human rights activism, the immigrant experience, the relationship between the particular and the universal, and the violence of hegemony and imperialism in relationship with society, family, and community. The Editors of the collection have carefully compiled works that show how Danticat’s writings may help in building more compassionate and relational human communities that are grounded on the imperative of human dignity, respect, inclusion, and peace.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great philosopher's major work on ethics, along with Ecce Homo, Nietzche's remarkable review of his life and works. On the Genealogy of Morals (1887) shows him using philsophy, psychology, and classical philology in an effort to give new direction to an ancient discipline. The work consists of three essays. The first contrasts master morality and slave morality and indicates how the term "good" has widely different meanings in each. The second inquiry deals with guilt and the bad conscience; the third with ascetic ideals—not only in religion but also in the academy. Ecce Homo, written in 1898 and first published posthumously in 1908, is Nietzsche's review of his life and works. It contains chapters on all the books he himself published. His interpretations are as fascinating as they are invaluable. Nothing Nietzsche wrote is more stunning stylistically or as a human document. Walter Kaufmann's masterful translations are faithful of the word and spirit of Nietzsche, and his running footnote commentaries on both books are more comprehensive than those in his other Nietzsche translations because these tow works have been so widely misunderstood.
