Book excerpt: We live in an over-sexualised culture where sex and sexuality have become part of the public domain. This sexual revolution challenges Judeo-Christian and Islamic norms and boundaries. As such, sexuality education is a sensitive and extremely important issue, and its current implementation in schools has raised public concerns. This book explores the subject, contextualising it within the matrix of Islamic beliefs and practices. Islam binds sexuality and sexual education to a moral grid with rights and obligations, justice and equity. There is a dominant discourse and stereotype around ‘Islamic sexuality’, which presents sex and sexuality as the biggest taboo, fraught with fear and seldom discussed. This book dispels such myths and misconceptions, providing an overview of sexuality education in the modern world and the need for such education.

Therefore this book will discuss some of these duties so that muslims can strive to maintain these ties in ways pleasing to Allah, the Exalted, so that they can Achieve Noble Character. Book excerpt: Food trucks announcing "halal" proliferate in many urban areas but how many non-Muslims know what this means, other than cheap lunch? Here Middle Eastern historians Febe Armanios and Bogac Ergene provide an accessible introduction to halal (permissible) food in the Islamic tradition, exploring what halal food means to Muslims and how its legal and cultural interpretations have changed in different geographies up to the present day. Historically, Muslims used food to define their identities in relation to co-believers and non-Muslims. Food taboos are rooted in the Quran and prophetic customs, as well as writings from various periods and geographical settings. As in Judaism and among certain Christian sects, Islamic food traditions make distinctions between clean and impure, and dietary choices and food preparation reflect how believers think about broader issues. Traditionally, most halal interpretations focused on animal slaughter and the consumption of intoxicants. Muslims today, however, must also contend with an array of manufactured food products--yogurts, chocolates, cheeses, candies, and sodas--filled with unknown additives and fillers. To help consumers navigate the new halal marketplace, certifying agencies, government and non-government bodies, and global businesses vie to meet increased demands for food piety. At the same time, blogs, cookbooks, restaurants, and social media apps have proliferated, while animal rights and eco-conscious activists seek to recover halal's more wholesome and ethical inclinations. Covering practices from the Middle East and North Africa to South Asia, Europe, and North America, this timely book is for anyone curious about the history of halal food and its place in the modern world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As good character will be the heaviest thing in the Scales of Judgement Day it is vital for all muslims to adopt it. This has been confirmed in a Hadith found in Jami At Tirmidhi, number 2003. In fact, the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, once confirmed that he was sent by Allah, the Exalted, to perfect good character. This is confirmed in a Hadith found in Imam Bukhari's, Adab Al Mufrad, number 273. Even though, the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, was blessed with countless virtues and favours the one which Allah, the Exalted, directly complemented was His noble character. Chapter 68 Al Qalam, verse 4: “And indeed, you are of a great moral character.” A Hadith which summarises the blessed character of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, is found in Sunan Abu Dawud, number 1342. It advises that his character was the Holy Quran. This means the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, adopted all the good characteristics mentioned in the Holy Quran and avoided all the evil characteristics mentioned in it. There was no good quality but he acted on it in the highest possible way and there is no evil characteristic which he did not avoid to the utmost. The Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, fulfilled all the commands of the Holy Quran and avoided all its prohibitions. Therefore, this book will directly mention the noble characteristics of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, so that muslims can strive to adopt them as adopting his noble character is not possible without knowing them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stem cell research has been a problematic endeavour. For the past twenty years it has attracted moral controversies in both the public and the professional sphere. The research involves not only laboratories, clinics and people, but ethics, industries, jurisprudence, and markets. Today it contributes to the development of new therapies and affects increasingly many social arenas. The matrix approach introduced in this book offers a new understanding of this science in its relation to society. The contributions are multidisciplinary and intersectional, illustrating how agency and influence between science and society go both ways. Conceptually, this volume presents a situated and reflexive approach for philosophy and sociology of the life sciences. The practices that are part of stem cell research are dispersed, and the concepts that tie them together are tenuous; there are persistent problems with the validation of findings, and the ontology of the stem cell is elusive. The array of applications shapes a growing bioeconomy that is dependent on patient donations of tissues and embryos, consumers, and industrial support. In this volume it is argued that this research now denotes not a specific field but a flexible web of intersecting practices, discourses, and agencies. To capture significant parts of this complex reality, this book presents recent findings from researchers, who have studied in-depth aspects of this matrix of stem cell research. This volume presents state-of-the-art examinations from senior and junior scholars in disciplines from humanities and laboratory research to various social sciences, highlighting particular normative and epistemological intersections. The book will appeal to scholars as well as wider audiences interested in developments in life science and society interactions. The novel matrix approach and the accessible case studies make this an excellent resource for science and society courses.

Book excerpt: Every week Friday comes and for us Muslims, Friday is very crucial in the sense we have our Jummah prayers. Along with the Jummah prayers we have our weekly sermons. What happens is that most of us tend to forget the sermons delivered by the Imams. So I thought of this system of writing down all the sermons so that the knowledge we gain gets preserved. Furthermore the sisters who are mostly unable to attend the Jummah prayer in many countries do not get the chance to learn from the weekly sermons. The males can easily record their learning and teach the women at their home. All the sermons are from the Imams from the Masjids I attend weekly and the Hadiths mentioned are from their own sermons. Sometimes the Imams may tend to refer to weak Hadiths, I have tried my best to classify them as much as possible. May Allah have mercy upon us all and may we get guided to the Straight Path, Ameen.

Book excerpt: Homosexuality is a cross-cutting challenge to Malawian society with theological, socio-cultural, economic, legal, political, and human rights implications. This book argues that the solution to the homosexuality debate in Malawi does not lie in either the criminalization or decriminalization of homosexuality; neither does it lie in homophobia nor heterophobia. However, the solution to the homosexuality debate lies in achieving a harmonious co-existence of both heterosexuals and homosexuals by practicing mutual tolerance. The book concludes by suggesting various activities to be taken by: The Government of Malawi; Gay Rights Activists; Religious Leaders; Traditional Leaders; and Malawian Society to ensure the aforementioned tolerance and understanding is encouraged.
